Your perfect wedding dress – how to choose it!

Helpful Guides

Whether you have been dreaming about every single detail on your wedding dress since you were 5, or you’ve never thought about it until you said “yes” to your partner, working out how to choose your perfect wedding dress can feel like a daunting experience.  We’ve put together these 10 tips to help you to choose your perfect wedding gown, so you can beat the overwhelming and feel in control at your bridal appointment!

1. Create a mood board…

If you are the old fashioned type then grab a pile of magazines and some scissors and get cutting! Put together all of the inspo you can find.  If you prefer a more digital approach (or you are wanting to create a more sustainable wedding) then get a board created on Pinterest and pin all of the styles and looks that catch your eye.  This will help you with refining what looks, tones and details that you are most drawn to, which will help you to narrow down your selections.

2. Forget about sizing when choosing your perfect wedding dress…

Bridal gown sizing is nowhere near the same sizing as your regular outfits! With this in mind please don’t worry about sizes when choosing your perfect wedding dress.  Only you and your consultant will know anyway!

3. Shop early, but not too early…

If you’ve just got engaged and your wedding is not for a few years then you don’t need to think just yet about your dress shopping.  We recommend that you come to visit us in our beautiful barn boutique about 18 months away from your big day. This gives us time to help you find your perfect wedding dress, get it ordered and delivered and then fitted perfectly to you. Shopping too early could mean that you find that styles and fashions have changed. Similarly though don’t leave it too late as we may not be able to get your dress in time!

4. Be careful of too many opinions when choosing your perfect wedding dress…

We know that it is important for you to have your loved ones and close friends to help you with choosing your dress, but be careful not to have too much of an entourage! You may find that too many opinions can cause confusion and lead to frustration!  Your wedding dress choice is yours, remember that and trust your consultant to have your back when it’s needed with an opinionated entourage!

5. Figure out your wedding dress budget

There is nothing more heart-breaking for us than having a bride distraught because she’s tried on a dress that is out of her budget, because she hasn’t conveyed to us what her budget really is.  We want every bride to feel  like a rockstar at their appointment and there is never a need for embarrassment when it comes to talking about budgets.  Know that your consultant wants you to have the perfect dress that fits beautifully and that makes you feel amazing.

Remember that you also need to factor into your costs for the overall outfit:

  • The Dress
  • Your Wedding Veil or Headpiece
  • Your Shoes
  • Your Underwear
  • Your Jewellery
  • Make Up
  • Hair
  • Any other accessories (like gloves, a shawl, shrug or coat for example)

Having a clear idea on your budget will help you to feel more in control when it comes to finding your dream wedding dress.

6. Wear the right underwear…

You would be surprised at how many brides forget this one!  We recommend that you bring pale coloured comfortable underwear to your appointment so that you can try on a variety of styles. A multi-way or strapless bra is handy, but not essential. You want comfort to be your top priority when you are trying on dresses to find the perfect match.

7. Believe your consultant!

We’ve got tonnes of experience and have helped hundreds of brides with finding their dream dress.  We want to get to know you and your style so we can help with matching your perfect dress.  You can browse the ranges that we stock online, and come to your appointment with an open mind to try on as many ideas as you can. The team will never try to convince you of anything! We want to work with you and will always be honest – so trust and believe in us!  Having an open mind to different styles or approach could transform your thinking

8. If you have something you want incorporated bring it with you to your appointment

That beautiful heirloom veil that your grandmother wore, or that special piece of jewellery that has so much sentimental value should definitely be incorporated into your outfit! Please bring it to your appointment so that we can help you with matching them with your ideal gown.  It can be difficult to incorporate something if we can’t see it, so if you bring it we can discuss how it will work with your dress.

9. Embrace the feeling as well as the mirror…

It can be overwhelming trying on lots of dresses in similar styles. Try to think about how the dress makes you feel as much as what the mirrors (which can be deceptive) are telling you.

10. Enjoy the process!

Finding the perfect wedding dress can take time and it is an emotional purchase. Don’t underestimate how you might feel when you are shopping to find the perfect wedding dress.  Embrace it and enjoy it.  If you are not enjoying it then take a break!

I hope that this is a useful guide for you. We can’t wait to welcome you at Ivory & Lace for your appointment to find your dream dress.
